Matching and your coffee
How does matching work?
You answer eight quick questions about food you already love; we translate those into a taste profile and match you against our full range. You'll see your best match plus the two runners-up — and every coffee you rate makes the next match sharper.
What if I don't like my coffee?
Tell us. With a subscription, your first three coffees are covered: a miss earns a free re-match bag, and if the second misses too, a quick re-take of the quiz plus a free third try. After that, if a coffee you picked yourself misses, the first replacement is free and a second miss gets 50% off — that safety net resets yearly. We never argue about taste.
Can I change my coffee?
Anytime, free. Your account shows your top three matches — switch among them with one tap and it applies to your next shipment. You can also pick anything from the shelf.
Whole bean or ground?
Both. Choose your grind on the coffee's page — whole bean, or ground coarse, drip, or fine to match how you brew.
Do you have decaf?
Yes. We carry three low-caffeine coffees: a decaf, a decaf espresso, and Halflight — half regular, half decaffeinated — all decaffeinated with water rather than chemical solvents. They're a small, separate shelf: you choose them for the caffeine, so they're not matched to your taste the way the rest of our coffees are, and switching between the three is always free. Fair warning — taking the caffeine out softens a coffee's brightest, most delicate notes, so these lean smooth and sweet rather than light and fruity.
Does the guarantee cover the low-caffeine coffees?
Not the matching guarantee, and here's the honest why: our guarantee promises we'll get your match right, and re-match you free if we miss. The three low-caffeine coffees aren't matched to your taste — you're choosing them for the caffeine — so there's nothing to re-match to, and it wouldn't be a real promise. What you do get: switching between the three is always free, and if a bag ever turns up damaged or wrong, that's on us, exactly as it is for every coffee. And if you take the full quiz for a regular coffee, the matching guarantee applies to that in full when you switch your subscription.
Is your decaf actually caffeine-free?
Not quite — no decaf is. Decaffeination removes almost all of the caffeine, but a small trace always remains, so our decaf and decaf espresso are very low in caffeine rather than truly caffeine-free. Halflight is different by design: it's half regular coffee and half decaffeinated, so it sits in the middle — less than a regular cup, more than a decaf. If avoiding caffeine entirely matters for medical reasons, it's worth knowing that no decaf coffee is completely caffeine-free.
Why don't the low-caffeine coffees show up in the quiz?
The quiz matches you on flavor, and the three low-caffeine coffees are chosen on caffeine instead — so they live on their own shelf rather than in the match results. Tell us at the start that you want less caffeine or none, and we'll point you straight to them. The quiz still runs, so we learn your taste for the day you might switch to regular.
Pricing, shipping and your subscription
How much does it cost?
Every coffee is the same price — $26.50 for a 12 oz bag, $34.50 for 16 oz — with shipping included everywhere in the U.S., including Puerto Rico and APO addresses. The 16 oz costs a little less per ounce. You're billed per shipment; there's no commitment.
Why do you offer two sizes?
Two reasons, and they pull in the same direction: your pace and your coffee's freshness. Coffee is best within weeks of roasting, so the right bag is the one you'll finish while it's still at its best. We match most households to the 16 oz — it costs a little less per ounce and suits the way most people drink. But if you drink less, a 12 oz that arrives a little more often keeps every cup fresher than a big bag going stale on the counter; if you drink more, we can send the larger size or send it sooner. The size and the timing both flex to you — you're only ever billed when a bag actually ships.
Where do you ship, and how fast?
Everywhere in the U.S. — all fifty states, Puerto Rico, the territories, and APO/FPO — with shipping included in the price. Your coffee is freshly roasted and ships within days of the roast, roast date on the bag.
How does "coffee that keeps your pace" work?
Tell us roughly how much you brew and we size the bag and time deliveries to match, tuning over your first few shipments. Running low? Tap "ship it now" and your next bag moves up — all your future dates follow. Piling up? One tap slows it down.
How long does a bag stay fresh?
Coffee is at its best within a few weeks of roasting, and every bag shows its roast date. Whole beans hold longer than ground, and an unopened bag longer than an opened one — but the short version is that we time your shipments so a bag arrives while the last one's running out, not after it's gone stale. That's the whole point of sizing to your pace.
Can I pause, skip, or cancel?
Anytime, in about three taps, from Manage my coffee. Pause for 1–3 months and we'll resume automatically (with a reminder first); canceling is one click with no phone calls and no guilt trip.
What happens if my coffee is out of stock?
Rarely happens — but if it does, your next-closest match ships on your normal date at 20% off, and we switch you back automatically the moment yours returns. Prefer to wait or pick your own? One tap either way. And if the substitute misses, one free replacement is on us.
Gifts
How long does a gift last?
A gift is a number of shipments — 3, 6, or 12 — not a fixed number of months. Each shipment is a full 16 oz bag, timed to how fast they actually drink, so a gift lasts roughly that many months for most households, and longer for lighter drinkers. It starts only once they activate — and the count never changes, whatever happens to our prices in between.
Do gift subscriptions auto-renew?
Never. When the last gifted shipment lands, it ends — we'll ask the recipient if they'd like to continue, and that's it.
What if my gift is never claimed?
It keeps — gifts never expire and carry no fees. We'll send the recipient a gentle reminder now and then (they can opt out anytime), and until they start, you can ask us to re-send it, move the shipments to your own subscription, or refund it in full. If it's still unclaimed after about a year, we'll check in and ask what you'd like to do — including nothing at all.
Does the guarantee cover gifts?
Yes — for the moment that matters most. If a gift recipient's first coffee misses, we send a free re-matched bag that doesn't use up a gifted shipment — one per gift. After that, switching between matched coffees is free for the whole gift. Gift remedies are always coffee, never cash, and the yearly Experimentation Safety Net starts if they continue with their own subscription afterward.
Can I get decaf as a gift, or split a subscription between regular and decaf?
Both work. You can gift the low-caffeine coffees just like any other — the recipient picks from the three when they activate. And if your household is split — one regular drinker, one decaf — your subscription can carry both as separate lines under one account, each sized and timed to how fast that coffee actually gets used.
